What is 100K Cheeks?
100K Cheeks is a Stanford-based advocacy group dedicated to increasing the number of people enrolled in the international bone marrow registry. Within this overarching mission, a central goal of the organization is to specifically address the severe shortage of South Asian donors in the registry. The match rate within the South Asian demographic is critically low – a meager 1 in 20,000 chance for a potential recipient to find a match. In the face of this heart-rending problem, we cannot stand idle as South Asians lives are lost to cancer and other debilitating diseases.

The 100K Cheeks team is determined to get 100,000 people, at least 80% of whom are of South Asian decent, to give a cheek swab for the bone marrow registry. This diversification of the bone marrow donor pool will significantly increase the chances of South Asian cancer patients finding a match. Our strategies are to use the tenets of the Dragonfly Effect, with a strong emphasis on personal stories, to convey the message that registering as a donor has the power to save a life. A small donation of time can change someone’s entire world and give that person a chance to live on in the face of cancer.

In the upcoming months we will be instituting a strong campaign for new marrow registrations on social media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Additionally, we will be conducting on-site drives at corporations across the United states, as well as starting an intercollegiate competition to determine which university or college can enlist the highest percentage of undergraduates to give a cheek swab. Advances in medical science have transformed the donation process into a painless procedure no more invasive than the donation of blood. All it takes is a few minutes of time to give someone a chance at life. Take action today, and start spreading the word about 100K Cheeks.
